What you're looking at above is a sculpture that was unveiled last week in Rutland, Vermont honoring Tom Fagan. Fagan was a huge Batman fan back in the day and was the founder of the Rutland Halloween Parade. He was actually quite enmeshed with comic book creators back in the 1970s, and his annual Halloween party regularly saw the likes of Roy Thomas, Marv Wolfman, Len Wein, Wendy & Richard Pini, Andy Yanchus, Irene Vartanoff, and many others from the industry. Rutland found itself to be the backdrop of about two dozen comics, usually set during Halloween, and Fagan himself appeared in over half of them. He was THE fixture of Rutland in October every year for decades, and the city's annual parade has gotten big and notable enough that they put up a marble sculpture along the parade route to honor him.
The sculpture was designed by Jiannan Wu,
based on Neal Adams artwork from Batman #237.
Alessandro Lombardo
carved the piece from a ten-ton block of Danby white marble at the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center before it was installed at 107 West Street.
I, for one, am thrilled to see Fagan being celebrated in this way.
A video of the sculpture's creation, as well as the (mostly pretty dry) unveiling ceremony was put together by PEGTV...
