I was recently reminded of this 2009 story where Iraqi cartoonist Salman Abed had to go into hiding because he feared his cartoons of Iraqi officials had pissed them off so much that he would be arrested. Or worse. I mentioned it briefly here on my blog at the time, but I never heard any follow-up reports on him. In fact, when I went digging around this morning, I still found remarkably little.
I found a 2018 comment in a post about another cartoonist that said he was still in hiding, but it also said he was hiding from the Iranian government, not the Iraqi government so I'm not sure how reliable that is.
And then there's this Facebook page that's posted a dozen of his cartoons over the past four years. There's no real information about him beyond that, so I don't know if it's an "official" account or just a fan-created one, nor do I know if those are all the cartoons he's done or just a selection. The small handful of comments made from others are pretty much all just of the "may God protect you" variety, without any explicit mention of whatever his current situation might be.
So, does anyone know if he's still in hiding and/or how he may be faring these days?
