On History: Great Day, Great Country

I wanted to include an old Independence Day comic today, and I apparently already used that one Little Nemo strip a few years back. Instead, I found this editorial cartoon from later in McCay's career. Gorgeous though the illustration is, it's hard for me to get behind any of the messages in the actual comic itself, in light of the past few months of horribleness coming out of Washington, DC. But try to have a "Happy Independence Day" anyway -- this may be the last year the phrase is not completely ironic.
