A little over a year ago, I posted a note that basically said that writers can overrely on the basic story structure that Joseph Campbell laid out in The Hero with a Thousand Faces. I just came across this Tom Gauld cartoon that puts the same idea in a much more succinct form. Campbell's work is certainly useful and well-worth studying; it just becomes less fun when it gets treated as a simple formula.
